Accelerator Mass Spectrometry group GAMS

The GAMS group is an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) group working at the Maier-Leibnitz-Laboratory in Garching, Germany which features a 14 MV MP tandem accelerator. AMS is an accelerator-based technique that can be used to detect radionuclides at trace levels with a sensitivity down to 10-17.
The radioisotopes measured at this facility include 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca, 53Mn, 59Ni, 60Fe, 79Se, 93Zr, 97Tc, 99Tc, 238U, 244Pu and others. The applications of AMS with isotopes such as these are numerous and include among others astrophysics, geophysics, extraterrestrial physics, nuclear physics, environmental studies, nuclear waste management and radiopurity studies.
The sensitivity of the detection system can be achieved by complete suppression of molecular background in the stripping process in the tandem accelerator and by dedicated isobaric suppression techniques. We are specialized in the measurement of 53Mn and 60Fe and in the development of new AMS techniques and the implementation of new AMS isotopes.
